This website presents early lighting devices and their accessories from a collection of over 500 pieces dating primarily from the beginning of the 18th century through the third quarter of the 19th century, with exceptions before and after those dates. The pieces are grouped according to the types of fuel they burned, although some devices functioned effectively with a variety of oils and fats. The collection is the possession of H.H. Dolan and is illustrated on this website for purposes of acquainting his fellow Rushlight Club members with lightimg acquired over the past 50 years.

This engraving by Larmessin (1636-1694) depicts a tinsmith of the 17th century travelling with his wares, with lighting devices suspended from his person. It is a humorous symbol of the lamp maker of those times.

Inaccuracies may exist in some of the descriptions due to vagaries in the history of lighting. Comment and correction will be welcomed by this website.
